How many akiya are there in Japan?

As of the 2023 national survey, Japan had 9.0 million vacant homes — a record vacancy rate of 13.8%. Of those, about 3.86 million (5.9% of all housing) are long-term abandoned akiya — the genuinely empty houses, not seasonal or between-tenant homes.
